Hamster Eye Problems: Causes, Symptoms, and When to See a Vet
Hamsters have poor eyesight to begin with — they rely far more on smell and hearing than vision. But eye problems can still cause pain and signal underlying illness.
Common Hamster Eye Problems
Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye)
Bacterial conjunctivitis is the most common eye problem in hamsters. It causes redness, swelling of the eyelid lining, and discharge ranging from clear and watery to thick and yellow. Common causes: bacteria (Staphylococcus, Streptococcus), dusty or dirty bedding, poor ventilation, or spread from a respiratory infection.
Sticky Eye (Eye Sealed Shut)
Some hamsters — particularly older ones — develop a condition where the eyelid becomes sealed shut with discharge. This is most often caused by conjunctivitis or a blocked tear duct. Gentle cleaning can help temporarily, but a vet visit is needed.
Exophthalmos (Bulging Eye)
If a hamster's eye appears to be bulging or protruding from the socket, this can indicate infection behind the eye, dental root abscess, or trauma. This requires prompt veterinary evaluation.
Corneal Scratch
A piece of bedding, hay, or cage wire can scratch the eye surface. Signs include sudden squinting or rubbing, watering, and sometimes cloudiness.
Cataracts
Older hamsters — particularly diabetic dwarf hamster species — can develop cataracts (whitish or cloudy eye). Vision loss occurs but is not typically painful.
Symptoms to Watch For
- Watery or crusty discharge from one or both eyes
- Redness around the eye
- Swelling of the eyelid
- Eye sealed shut or difficult to open
- The hamster rubbing or pawing at the eye
- Cloudiness or white appearance on the eye surface
- One eye appearing noticeably larger than the other
When to See a Vet
See an exotic vet within 24–48 hours if:
- The eye has thick yellow or green discharge
- The eye is sealed shut and won't open after gentle cleaning
- The eye appears to be bulging
- Cloudiness develops on the eye surface
- The hamster seems to be in pain
What to Do at Home
For mild crusty discharge: gently clean around the eye with a warm, damp cotton ball. Wipe from the inner corner outward. Do not apply any drops without vet guidance. Check the bedding — switch to paper-based, low-dust bedding if needed.
