Hamster Diarrhea: Causes, Wet Tail vs. Regular Diarrhea, and When It's Urgent
Diarrhea in a hamster is never something to dismiss. While some causes are minor and self-resolving, wet tail โ the most serious form โ can kill a hamster within 24โ48 hours without veterinary treatment.
Wet Tail vs. Regular Diarrhea: A Critical Distinction
What Is Wet Tail?
Wet tail (proliferative ileitis) is a bacterial infection of the intestinal tract, most commonly caused by Lawsonia intracellularis. The most visible sign is wet, matted fur around the tail and rear end from profuse, watery diarrhea.
Wet tail is most common in young hamsters (3โ6 weeks old), often triggered by the stress of weaning, transport, or a new home. It is not exclusive to any species but is most common in Syrian hamsters.
Wet tail requires emergency veterinary care. The mortality rate is very high even with treatment; without treatment, most affected hamsters die within 24โ72 hours.
Signs of Wet Tail (Emergency)
- Wet, soiled fur around the tail and anus
- Very watery or bloody diarrhea
- Severe lethargy โ the hamster may be almost unresponsive
- Loss of appetite
- Hunched posture
- Foul smell
- Dehydration โ skin "tents" when gently pinched
Regular Diarrhea
Not all diarrhea is wet tail. Soft or loose stools without the classic wet fur can be caused by:
- Dietary change โ too many fresh foods too quickly, especially high-water-content fruits
- Stress โ from handling, environment change, or noise
- Bacterial infection โ milder than wet tail but still needs attention
- Parasites
Regular diarrhea without severe lethargy and wet fur is less immediately life-threatening but warrants monitoring, and if it doesn't resolve within 24 hours, a vet visit.
When to Seek Veterinary Care
Go immediately if:
- Fur around the tail is wet and soiled
- The hamster is severely lethargic or unresponsive
- There is blood in the stool
- The hamster has not eaten or drunk in over 12 hours
Call your vet within 24 hours if:
- Soft stools persist beyond a day without the emergency signs above
What to Do at Home
Remove fresh fruits and vegetables temporarily. Ensure access to plain water and dry food. Keep the enclosure clean and dry. Keep the hamster warm. Do not give human diarrhea medications.
