- Is breathing with effort (sides heaving, head extended)
- Has blue or pale gums or lips

- Refuses all food
- Is unresponsive or barely moving
- Has rapidly worsened over a few hours
Don't wait to see if it improves overnight.
Prevention
The best defense is good husbandry:
- Indoor housing in a draft-free area — not near AC vents, open windows, or doors
- Stable temperature between 65–75°F
- Clean, dry bedding changed regularly
- Vitamin C supplementation — guinea pigs cannot make their own; offer fresh bell pepper daily and consider a vet-recommended supplement
- Quarantine new guinea pigs for 2–4 weeks before introducing them
- Don't house guinea pigs with rabbits — rabbits can carry Bordetella asymptomatically
- Wash hands before handling, especially if you've handled rabbits or sick animals
What To Do at Home
While arranging emergency care:
- Keep them warm and calm — a small towel-lined carrier in a quiet, warm room
- Offer their favorite foods — moist greens, cucumber, or vitamin-C-rich vegetables
- Hydrate — offer water from a syringe if they aren't drinking on their own
- Do not give human cold medicine or essential oils — many are toxic
- Do not delay — guinea pigs decompensate fast
If your vet prescribes antibiotics, give the full course exactly as directed. Some antibiotics commonly used in dogs and cats (including penicillin, amoxicillin, and clindamycin) are dangerous in guinea pigs. Only use what an exotic vet prescribes for your specific pig.
