Guinea Pig Diarrhea: Causes, Warning Signs & Care

2 min readMay 9, 2026

Diarrhea in guinea pigs โ€” soft, wet, or liquid droppings instead of the normal firm pellets โ€” is always a signal that something is off. While a mild case from a dietary change may resolve quickly, diarrhea in guinea pigs can also indicate a serious infection that needs prompt veterinary attention.

Normal vs. Abnormal Droppings

Normal guinea pig droppings are uniform, oval, firm, and dark brown. Guinea pigs also produce cecotropes โ€” soft, nutrient-rich droppings they eat directly. You typically shouldn't see cecotropes in the cage.

Diarrhea refers to droppings that are soft or mushy (but not cecotropes), watery, or liquid โ€” often sticking to the fur around the hindquarters and leaving wet streaks in the cage.

What Causes Guinea Pig Diarrhea?

Sudden Diet Changes

The most common mild cause of soft stools in guinea pigs is introducing too many fresh vegetables too quickly. The GI bacteria need time to adjust. Excess fruit, watery vegetables (cucumber, watermelon), or new foods can all cause temporary loose stools.

Bacterial Infection

Salmonella, Clostridium, and E. coli infections can cause severe, watery diarrhea in guinea pigs. These are serious and can cause rapid dehydration and death, particularly in young or immunocompromised animals. Signs include profuse liquid diarrhea, lethargy, loss of appetite, and a hunched posture.

Parasites

Coccidia and other intestinal parasites are more common in young guinea pigs, particularly those from pet stores or mixed populations. They cause diarrhea, weight loss, and poor condition.

Antibiotic Use

Some antibiotics โ€” particularly penicillin, amoxicillin, ampicillin, and erythromycin โ€” are toxic to guinea pig gut flora and can cause fatal diarrhea. Never give your guinea pig antibiotics prescribed for another species without explicit veterinary guidance.

Dental Problems

Dental pain can prevent normal eating, disrupting the GI system and leading to abnormal stool consistency.

Emergency Warning Signs

Get to an exotic vet immediately if your guinea pig has:

  • Watery, profuse diarrhea (not just soft stools)
  • Lethargy โ€” sitting hunched, not moving, eyes dull
  • Not eating or drinking
  • Blood in the stool
  • Rapid weight loss
  • Diarrhea in a very young guinea pig (under 3 months)

What To Do at Home

  • Remove all fresh vegetables and fruit temporarily โ€” offer only quality grass hay and water
  • Gradually reintroduce vegetables one at a time in small amounts
  • Keep the hindquarters clean and dry to prevent urine scald and infection
  • Weigh your guinea pig daily โ€” a digital kitchen scale works well; weight loss >30g in a day is concerning
  • Increase water availability โ€” offer multiple water sources

Do not give human anti-diarrhea medications โ€” they are not safe for guinea pigs.
